Satyagraha, trnalsated as "insistence on truth", is the second in Phillip Glass' "Portrait Trilogy", proceded by Einstein on The Beach and Akhnaten, and also composed by Constance DeJong, all revolving around men responsible for change in the world. An Opera which premiered in Rotterdam in 1980, Satyagraha is based on the life of Mohandas Ghandi and features text from the Bhagavad Gita (an episode in the Indian epic Mahabharata) sung in the original Sanskrit. As Phillip Glass writes in his preface on the continuing influence of Ghandi's impact, "that his life and mind have permeated nationalist movements, dissident movements, human rights movemets, women's movements, ecological movmeents all becomes apparent with the slightest reflection".
