Maestro Karl Böhm, having received from Bruno Walter a love for Mozart as well as a sense of phrasing and lightening the orchestral mass essential to serving the composer's work, had long since lost the use of one eye and, with his vision further deteriorating, conducted from memory without reading the music.
His interpretation of The Magic Flute amazes with its natural momentum and suggests that working alongside Fritz Busch (a prominent Mozartian) in 1934 at the Glyndebourne Festival had happy consequences for him.
