What it's used for
- Furniture frames and cabinet making, where a hard, stable timber is needed
- Tool handles, sporting goods, and ladder rungs, due to its high impact resistance
- Internal flooring and stair components, including treads and handrails
- Structural joinery and workshop projects requiring long, largely defect-free lengths
Fitting and handling
Kiln dried White Ash should be stored flat and off the ground in a dry, well-ventilated space. Allow the timber to acclimatise to its installation environment for at least five to seven days before cutting and fitting, particularly for flooring or joinery where moisture movement could affect fit. The sawn surface machines, planes, and finishes well with standard woodworking tools; pre-drilling is recommended near edges to prevent splitting when fixing with screws or nails.
FAQ
Is North American White Ash suitable for hardwood flooring?
Yes. White Ash has a Janka hardness comparable to European Oak, making it a practical choice for domestic and light commercial flooring. At 38mm sawn thickness there is ample material to machine down to a finished board profile with a tongue and groove if required.
What does FAS grade mean and why does it matter?
FAS stands for Firsts and Seconds and is the highest commercially available grade for North American hardwoods. Boards must be a minimum size and yield a high percentage of clear, defect-free material. For furniture or visible joinery this grade reduces waste and avoids the need to cut around knots or splits.
Can I order cut-to-size White Ash from Nottage Timber Merchants?
