In Black Forest, you begin with a small domain that requires new buildings and livestock. You'll travel between villages to recruit skilled specialists who can help you gather resources, lay down landscape tiles (like ponds and fields), and construct various buildings, which fall into four types. By selecting the right buildings, creating landscapes, boosting glass production, and expanding your domain, you’ll grow your territory.

Uwe Rosenberg’s iconic resource wheels, introduced in Glass Road (2013), are featured again in Black Forest. The game uses two resource wheels on your tableau to track resources and production. Set in the Black Forest, the game diverges from Glass Road by incorporating worker placement, rather than simultaneous action selection.
