Beauregard Sweet Potatoes are one of the most popular and widely grown varieties, known for their dark red-orange skin and moist, sweet, orange flesh. Developed by Louisiana State University in 1987, Beauregard Sweet Potatoes are prized for their ability to produce large, blocky roots that store well and perform admirably in both northern and southern states. This guide provides detailed information on how to grow and care for Beauregard Sweet Potato slips to ensure a successful harvest.

Characteristics of Beauregard Sweet Potatoes:

  • Appearance: Beauregard Sweet Potatoes have dark red-orange skin and vibrant orange flesh. Their roots are typically large and blocky in shape.
  • Flavor and Texture: The flesh is moist, sweet, and smooth, making Beauregard a versatile choice for various culinary applications.
  • Maturity: Beauregard Sweet Potatoes are considered an early variety, typically maturing in 95 to 105 days under optimal growing conditions.
  • Climate Adaptability: This variety performs well in both northern and southern states, making it a versatile option for gardeners across different climates.

Selecting and Preparing the Site:

  • Climate: Sweet potatoes thrive in warm climates and require a long growing season with at least 90 to 120 frost-free days. Beauregard Sweet Potatoes are adaptable to cooler climates and perform well with proper care.
  • Soil: Sweet potatoes prefer well-drained, sandy loam soil with a pH between 5.8 and 6.2. The soil should be loose and free of stones or debris to allow the roots to expand easily.
  • Sunlight: Choose a location that receives full sun for at least 6 to 8 hours per day. Sweet potatoes need ample sunlight to produce high yields.

Preparing the Slips:

  • Fill a tray half way with potting soil or Quickroot and moisten.
  • Put your whole sweet potato on top of the soil horizontally and add about an inch of soil but do not completely cover.
  • Place the tray on a heating mat, and to speed up the sprouting, place your tray under a grow light.
  • Keep the soil moist but not soggy
  • In about a week, there should be roots coming from the bottom and small sprouts forming on the top or sides.
  • Allow the sprouts to grow to at least 6 inches long.
  • This process will take about 4-6 weeks.

Rooting the Slips

  • Once the sprouts are at least 6 inches long remove them from the sweet potato by cutting them off at the potato. Some may have already begun to form roots if located along the bottom portion of the sweet potato. Just tease them out of the soil, trying not to break of any roots that are formed.
  • Remove the lower leaves from the sprouts and place in a jar or glass of water to allow roots to form.
  • To speed up the process you can place the jar on a heating mat or under a grow light. Roots should start forming in a couple of days.
  • Change out the water once a week and remove any sprouts that have died and are not forming roots.
  • Once the sprout has roots that are about 2-3 inches long you are ready to plant your slips.
  • One whole sweet potato can yield about a dozen or more sprouts. You may have more slips than you can handle in your garden. Give them away to friends, family or to a school or community garden.

Caring for Beauregard Sweet Potatoes:

  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as straw or compost, around the plants to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.
  • Fertilization: Sweet potatoes generally do not require heavy fertilization. However, a balanced fertilizer applied at planting can promote healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they can lead to excessive vine growth at the expense of tuber development.
  • Watering: Provide regular watering, especially during dry spells. Sweet potatoes need consistent moisture to develop properly, but overwatering can lead to rot. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, adjusting based on rainfall and soil conditions.

Pest and Disease Management:

  • Common Pests: Sweet potatoes can be affected by pests such as sweet potato weevils, wireworms, and aphids. Monitor the plants regularly and use appropriate organic or chemical controls if necessary. Introducing beneficial insects like ladybugs can help manage aphid populations.
  • Disease Prevention: Sweet potatoes are susceptible to diseases like root rot and leaf spot. To minimize disease risk, practice crop rotation and avoid planting sweet potatoes in the same spot each year. Ensure good air circulation by spacing plants appropriately and removing any diseased foliage promptly.

Tips for Successful Growing:

  • Black Plastic Mulch: For northern states, using black plastic mulch can help warm the soil and promote faster growth. Lay the plastic over the planting area and cut holes for planting the slips. This technique can be especially beneficial in cooler climates.
  • Companion Planting: Plant sweet potatoes alongside companion plants like beans, marigolds, and nasturtiums to help repel pests and improve soil health.
  • Crop Rotation: Rotate sweet potato crops with legumes or other non-related crops to reduce the buildup of pests and diseases in the soil.
  • Soil Testing: Conduct a soil test before planting to determine nutrient levels and pH. Amend the soil as needed based on the test results to create optimal growing conditions.
  • Avoiding Soil Compaction: Sweet potatoes need loose, well-aerated soil to develop properly. Avoid walking on the planting beds and consider raised beds if soil compaction is a concern.
  • Weed Control: Keep the planting area weed-free, especially during the early stages of growth. Weeds can compete with sweet potatoes for nutrients and water, affecting overall yield.

Harvesting Beauregard Sweet Potatoes:

  • Timing: Beauregard Sweet Potatoes are typically ready to harvest 95 to 105 days after planting. The vines will begin to yellow and die back, indicating that the tubers are mature.
  • Harvesting: Use a garden fork or spade to carefully lift the sweet potatoes from the soil. Handle the tubers gently to avoid bruising or damaging the skin. Any cuts or bruises can lead to rot during storage.
  • Curing: After harvesting, cure the sweet potatoes by placing them in a warm, humid environment (about 85°F with 85-90% humidity) for 7 to 10 days. Curing helps to heal any cuts and enhances the sweetness of the tubers.
  • Storage: Once cured, store the sweet potatoes in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Ideal storage conditions are around 55°F with moderate humidity. Properly cured and stored sweet potatoes can last for several months.

Container Growing:

  • While Beauregard Sweet Potatoes are typically grown in the ground, they can also be grown in large containers. Choose a container that is at least 12 inches deep and has adequate drainage.
  • Use a high-quality potting mix and ensure the container is placed in a sunny location. Follow the same care guidelines as for in-ground planting, paying special attention to watering needs as container plants can dry out more quickly.

By following these guidelines for growing and caring for Beauregard Sweet Potato slips, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious sweet potatoes. With proper attention to their needs, these versatile and flavorful tubers will reward you with a delightful addition to your home garden. Happy gardening!

🌶️ 0/5 ⭐️ 3/5 I will preface this by saying I am not a huge RH fan. However it didn’t feel like a RH quite yet. The relationships and plot are all building in this book. At first I was thinking things were happening stupid fast since she’s had zero interaction with another being and has been tortured her whole life, and I believe they were for one side of the relationship, but by 50% things moved too slow lol. Idk I think the main 1-3 guys I’m actually interested in more than the others didn’t get enough air time so I hope the next book things start moving with them since it ended the way it did.

Can I have Term 2 now?
Format: Kindle
This is by far my favorite book of Lyra's to date. I gobbled this book up so fast, I was so upset I finished it. I know this is going to be a book I reread, just like Fate Hollow Academy. I loved Fate Hollow Academy, so I was excited when Lyra announced she was taking us readers back to Kalista. Although the characters from Fate Hollow are mentioned several times throughout the book, this book is about Pandora and her love interests in the Demon Realm. Before you deep dive into this book, definitely look at the trigger warnings before you start. When Lyra says there's dark themes in this book, she meant it. Also, just know this book does end on a cliffhanger and will probably leave you with as many questions as it did me. Below may contain some minor spoilers, so keep that in mind if you want to keep reading my review. Pandora's first 2 decades of her life are full of torture, hatred, and confinement in a cellar. That is until her father finds her and brings her into the world she was supposed to live in. Because of her upbringing she wasn't acclimated to the Demon world and the way their society works so when she is offered the chance to go to a Demon Reform Accademy, she accepts it to learn the ways of society and how she is supposed to feed. Pandora isn't like the other common demons in this world, no. She, like her father Death, are soul-eaters. Pandora is too scared to release her powers because she doesn't want to kill anyone, so she needs to learn how to feed off of a piece of soul instead of taking the whole thing. Because of who her father is, she's classed as a Noble, and while she doesn't agree with her fellow Noble students, who look down on the "lower" class, she also is faced with 3 Demons who hate her for being a Noble. Theses a lot of back and forth tension which these 3 demons who have issues of their own. One is obsessed with her, and wants to know all of her secrets. One leaks fear all over the place, but also is scared of the "princess" -wink- -wink-. One is a complete drunk who doesn't like her just because he's got family Noble problems. Don't worry, there are 2 other demons who are just the sweetest towards her. One who will get vengeance for anything done to her, he's got Golden Retriever energy around her and touch her and die energy for anyone around her. Finally, there is one who is friends with her even when the whole school is scared of her, who brings her into his dreams and will create nightmares for those who bother her.

This was more than I expected...
Format: Kindle
So...I finished this book at nearly 2am! It was just that hard to put down. I loved that it's set in the same world as Fates Hollow but in the future. Poor Pandora has been through so much but there's light at the end of the tunnel for her. She finally meets her dad and it turns out he's amazing. In order to help her learn about demon society and how to control her magic he sends her to the Demon Reform Academy. There she meets 2 awesome demons who help her and care for her. She also sadly meets her 3 tormentors. I will say though that while they do bully Pandora they also rescue her several times and defend her. They too have traumatizing pasts and can't see the good that is in front of them. Of course demon society needs to be shaken up too since that's part of the problem. I really enjoyed this read. I teared up a few times throughout the book but I liked the characters and that ending...well it looks like 3 in denial are going to need to grovel hard.

MUST READ BOOK!!
Format: Kindle
I was in a huge reading slump, when one of my favorite authors recommended this book in her readers group (The amazing Marie Mistry 🫶) and I absolutely DEVOURED this book. Now I’m in the club crying about having to wait until December for Term 2! This book is about a girl named Pandora who has suffered a life that nobody would ever wish to have. This book is about Pandora learning how to live, learning about herself and what she really wants. She has a long journey to find out all of these things, but she took the first steps in this book and it was beautiful to read. Some of the men in this book are our dream men, Hunter and Reed 😍 and then we have the men who need some work and who we all really just want to beat up until they admit what they really feel, Skel, Bram and Dexter. But that cliffy was a killer and I absolutely cannot wait until the next book!! You have written an absolute dream of a book Lyra and I eagerly await the next installment in this series!!!

Addicting!
Format: Kindle
I could not stop reading. It was so refreshing to have a series start so completely different than most fated mates/fantasy academy rh I’ve been reading. From the desert scenery to the magic and feeding plus the psychological trauma the characters are there to deal with. Pandora is absolutely adorable and I totally relate to hiding behind my hair. I love that she’s literally the most scary type of demon but it’s not the usual “badass mc” persona (which I do love a badass that can fend for herself and kick ass from the start but it was a nice change of pace). I’m not usually a big fan of bully within the harem but each character has their reasons for their actions and also conflicting feelings about them. I adore Dex and Reed! Complete opposites but their personalities and inner monologues made them instant favs. I can’t wait to see the character growth with the guys and continued strength for Pandora. The captivating characters and references to the Fate Hallow series added so much depth and now I need another reread while I wait for book 2. The concept of magic and the unique feeding habits of the demon characters were intriguing. I can't wait for the next book to continue this thrilling journey. In summary, this book is a must-read for fantasy and magic academy rh fans. With its enchanting characters, nods to the Fate Hallow series, and imaginative concepts, it offers an immersive reading experience that hwill leave you craving for more.
