The Cisco ASR 9000 20-port 1-Gigabit Ethernet Modular Port Adapter (Mod80) is a high-density, flexible solution designed to extend the capabilities of the Cisco ASR 9000 family. Built for the demanding needs of service providers and large enterprises, this modular port adapter adds 20 independent 1-Gbps Ethernet interfaces in a compact Mod80 form factor, enabling dense access and edge termination without costly chassis overhauls. It is engineered for seamless integration with existing Cisco ASR 9922, 9010, and 9006 systems, along with compatible route switch processors (RSPs) and line cards, so you can scale capacity with minimal disruption to your network and operations. With no required hardware upgrades to chassis or cooling, the Mod80 empowers you to grow your WAN edge, support multi-service delivery, and optimize your investment in the Cisco 9000 platform while preserving reliability, security, and manageability. This description blends practical deployment scenarios with technical depth to help you understand how the Mod80 aligns with modern network requirements, from multi-tenant data center interconnects to resilient enterprise WAN deployments.

  • High-density, 20-port 1-Gigabit Ethernet solution: The Mod80 modular port adapter delivers twenty independent 1-Gbps Ethernet interfaces in a single module, enabling scalable termination for large-scale WAN edge and access-layer deployments. This dense port count reduces the need for multiple smaller cards and helps optimize rack space while preserving plentiful uplink and service-port options. Each port is designed for reliable, consistent performance, making the Mod80 ideal for diversified service profiles, including enterprise VPNs, branch termination, decade-long reliability, and predictable traffic engineering in congested networks.
  • Seamless compatibility with the Cisco ASR 9000 family: The Mod80 20-port card is fully compatible with the Cisco ASR 9922, 9010, and 9006 chassis, along with their associated route switch processors (RSPs) and line cards. This compatibility means you can extend your existing platform without chassis upgrades or additional cooling systems, preserving your current investment and minimizing downtime. The modular approach supports phased capacity expansion, allowing you to add ports as traffic growth dictates while maintaining a uniform Cisco software and management experience across the platform. Cisco’s design intent is clear: grow the network capability in a plug-and-play fashion, with consistent policy, security, and telemetry across all components of the ASR 9000 family.
  • Flexible bandwidth and service-oriented capabilities: Total throughput on the Mod80 depends on the number and type of RSPs installed, giving you a straightforward path to scale bandwidth as demand evolves. The 20 ports can terminate a range of services—from high-volume consumer and business Internet access to private line Ethernet services and MPLS-based VPNs—while enabling granular QoS and traffic engineering to meet SLA commitments. The modular architecture also supports flexible port configurations, enabling dedicated or shared termination for customers, tenants, or internal segments, all while preserving a single management plane for policy enforcement and service orchestration.
  • Reliability, manageability, and ease of maintenance: Built for carrier-grade reliability, the Mod80 module is designed for hot-swappable operation within the ASR 9000 chassis, minimizing downtime during replacements or upgrades. It pairs with Cisco IOS XR to deliver unified management, observability, and diagnostics, enabling remote configuration, monitoring, and fault isolation. The module supports standard Cisco management practices, including NX-OS-inspired workflows and secure remote access, ensuring operators can maintain service levels with predictable MTTR. Its robust thermal design and modular maintenance model help keep critical WAN edges online, even in demanding environments or during growth spurts.
  • Ideal for service providers and large enterprises seeking scalable edge connectivity: The 20-port 1-Gbps Mod80 adapter is purpose-built for edge aggregation, data center interconnect, and large campus deployments. Service providers can deliver multi-service termination with SLA-based performance, while enterprises can extend campus or metro networks with resilient Ethernet access. The Mod80 also supports future-proofing strategies: as traffic grows or new services are introduced, you can add capacity without rearchitecting the core, preserving capital expenditure and enabling a smooth migration path to higher-speed architectures when needed.

How to Install Cisco ASR 9000 20-port 1-Gigabit Ethernet Modular Port Adapter

  • Prepare and plan: Verify compatibility with your specific ASR 9000 chassis (9922, 9010, 9006) and confirm there is an available Mod80 slot. Review maintenance windows and ensure compliance with your organization’s electrical and grounding requirements. Have the Cisco IOS XR configuration and service plan ready to integrate new ports into existing policies and routing instances.
  • Power and safety: If the chassis is powered, follow proper LOTO procedures and ESD guidelines. In most cases, hot-swapping is supported, but always follow Cisco’s official installation guide and your data center’s safety protocols when handling live equipment.
  • Remove the blank or existing module: If a placeholder or a different module occupies the slot, remove it according to Cisco’s recommended procedure. Handle the module carefully to prevent damage to backplane connectors and ensure static protection is maintained.
  • Insert the Mod80 module: Align the Mod80 module with the slot and firmly seat it into place until it is fully engaged with the backplane connectors. Secure any latches or retention mechanisms as specified by Cisco’s installation instructions to guarantee stable operation and minimize vibration or disconnection risks in a busy environment.
  • Power up and verify: Reassemble any panels you removed, restore power, and boot the system if required. Use the Cisco IOS XR command-line interface or network management tools to verify port status, link integrity, and basic connectivity. Configure each 1-Gbps Ethernet port according to your design—assign VLANs, set QoS, apply ACLs, and establish traffic paths that align with your service contracts and SLAs.

Frequently asked questions

They Fixed My Boat
Size: PP67-712 V1
My boat wouldn’t start, and the outdrive wouldn’t go up or down. So I bought three of these solenoids and replaced the starter and both trim motor solenoids/relays. Now it starts right up with no problems and the trim motor is working again also. I have a 2006 Stingray boat.

Poor quality
Size: PP67-712 V1
Poor quality. Replaced a starter solenoid on a mercruser 4.3. Right off install it would click but not make a connection to start motor. Confirmed this was the culprit by jumping the terminals. After testing multiple times found it worked a little less than half the time.

Ya Just Gotta Have One
Size: 7.2 Surround + 3 HDMI
This is a must-have for in-wall wiring of your surround. I chose this one because I installed a 7.2 system with gold-plated jacks and it worked out great. You can get almost any combination of HDMI, subs/surrounds that you need (5.1, 5.2, 7.1, 7.2 etc). Do your planning on location and wire-routing; get good quality speaker wire and HDMI (high-speed with Audio Return Channel); get the remod-style mounting bracket/box then cut your hole at the same height/level as your electrical outlets and preferably between the same studs as your TV's wire-box so your HDMIs just run straight up to the TV (remember to install the bracket BEFORE you run your wires). When connecting the wires to these terminals, it's best to have 10 to 12 inches of wire coming out of the wall because you need space for your hands to manipulate the wires and nuts on the terminals. If you have a basement with access to the floor below the mounting location, it's best to drill 4 half-inch holes straight up through the bottom plate of the wall and feed your wires up those holes. Tip: If your TV and Surround Receiver are fully compatible you really only need 1 HDMI port on the wall plate, because you can plug your devices into the receiver and just sent the A/V/data to the TV while the audio is returned over the same HDMI.

Made a wire nest look fairly neat.
Size: 7.1 Surround + HDMI
My only complaint is that it wasn't available in black as it's in a dark walled home theater. However, it's behind the receiver so it's not real visible. It worked as expected and definitely kept the wiring neater and allowed me to run it through the walls.

Good quality, not enough connections
Size: 7.1 Surround + HDMI
Good quality, I wish the sold the individual outlets because I had to buy multiple just to get 11.1 surround connections.
