Improbable Scholars: The Rebirth of a Great American School System and a Strategy for America's SchoolsNo school district can be all charismatic leaders and super teachers. No school district can be all charismatic leaders and super-teachers. It can't start from scratch, and it can't fire all its teachers and principals when students do poorly. Great charter schools can only serve a tiny minority of students. Whether we like it or not, most of our youngsters will continue to be educated in mainstream public schools. The good news, as David L. Kirp reveals in Improbable Scholars, is that there's a sensible way to rebuild public education and close the achievement gap for all students. Indeed, this is precisely what's happening in a most unlikely place: Union City, New Jersey, a poor, crowded Latino community just across the Hudson from Manhattan. The school district--once one of the worst in the state--has ignored trendy reforms in favor of proven game-changers like quality early education, a word-soaked curriculum, and hands-on help for teachers. When beneficial new strategies have emerged, like using sophisticated data-crunching to generate pinpoint assessments to help individual students, they have been folded into the mix. The results demand that we take notice--from third grade through high school, Union City scores on the high-stakes state tests approximate the statewide average. In other words, these inner-city kids are achieving just as much as their suburban cousins in reading, writing, and math. What's even more impressive, nearly ninety percent of high school students are earning their diplomas and sixty percent of them are going to college. Top students are winning national science awards and full rides at Ivy League universities. These schools are not just good places for poor kids. They are good places for kids, period. Improbable Scholars offers a playbook--not a prayer book--for reform that will dramatically change our approach to reviving public education.Binding Type: Paperback

Color is not the same as picture, too light, assembly is harder than it should be
Size: g:Square Table with Umbrella Hole, Color: Light Grey
I had higher hopes for this table given the 80 dollar price tag. The gray finish is MUCH brighter than what is displayed in the picture. What's advertised matched the gray Adirondack set that I currently have in my yard, what came in was about 5 shades lighter. The assembly only had a few steps to it with a total of 8 bolts but it was more difficult that it had to be has the holes didn't line up very well and I actually had to bend one of the metal pieces to get the screw to line up. I ordered this piece initially to serve two purposes, the first was to add more stability to my ever blowing over umbrella, the second was to add a matching table piece in-between my two Adirondack chairs. This piece does neither very well. It is too light in color to match and serve to complete the set, and it is not heavy enough to add any layer of stability. For these reasons, I cannot recommend this piece.

Nice, but...
Size: g:Square Table with Umbrella Hole, Color: Black
Second one I bought. So I do like it, but for the price they could include an extra screw and washer. Also it would be much more convenient if the holes would line up correctly. That's why I gave only 3 stars. But it is a nice table.

Durability
I was very satisfied with the quality of another Best Choice Products: Ice Chest. So, I was happy to see the umbrella stand, weighted by water, was available by this company. It is, once again, made very resilient and strong to withstand tipping over. I'm a happy customer of this company's products!

Great design and easy to put together!
Color: Black - Square
Works very well and this is easily put together!
I filled mine with water and it is more than heavy enough to withstand a strong gust of wind. Highly recommended!
