Description

Roman Wives, Roman Widows: The Appearance of New Women and the Pauline CommunitiesIn Roman law you were what you wore. This legal principle became highly significant because, beginning in the first century A. D., a "new" kind of woman emerged across the Roman empire a woman whose provocative dress and sometimes promiscuous lifestyle contrasted starkly with the decorum of the traditional married woman. What a woman chose to wear came to identify her as either "new" or "modest." Augustus legislated against the "new" woman.

In Roman law you were what you wore. This legal principle became highly significant because, beginning in the first century A.D., a "new" kind of woman emerged across the Roman empire - a woman whose provocative dress and sometimes promiscuous lifestyle contrasted starkly with the decorum of the traditional married woman. What a woman chose to wear came to identify her as either "new" or "modest." Augustus legislated against the "new" woman. Philosophical schools encouraged their followers to avoid embracing her way of life. And, as this fascinating book demonstrates for the first time, the presence of the "new" woman was also felt in the early church, where Christian wives and widows were exhorted to emulate neither her dress code nor her conduct. Using his extensive knowledge both of the Graeco-Roman world and of the New Testament writings, Bruce Winter shows how changing social mores among women impacted the Pauline communities. This helps to explain the controversial texts on marriage veils in 1 Corinthians, instructions in 1 Timothy regarding dress code and the activities of young widows, and exhortations in Titus for older women to call new wives "back to their senses" regarding their marriage and family responsibilities. Based on a close investigation of neglected literary and archaeological evidence, Roman Wives, Roman Widows makes groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of first-century women, including their participation in public life as lawyers, magistrates, and political figures, which in turn affected women's ministry in the Pauline communities.

My dog loves the Multipet Skele toys!
Size: 15", Style: Duck
My dog absolutely loves this toy and the similar ones (we had a snowman first). He rolls around with it and seems to be so happy. My dog is an aggressive chewer- and he destroys these toys within a couple of months. We have to take pieces of it away as they come loose, especially the squeeker, but he still plays with the rest. I wish it would last longer because he really loves it, but I haven’t found a toy that he cant destroy yet.

Terrible!!!!
Size: 15", Style: Duck
My 2 Australian shepards destroyed this cheaply made toy in 20 minutes! It's advertised for tough chewers, lol, the material it was made from is so thin, you could almost see through it. Don't waste your time or money!

My dogs love it
Size: 15", Style: Rabbit
I have to say, this is not an indestructible toy. It would have been better made without the squeaker or filling in the head. Once I removed those (after the dogs dug them out) they have played with this and the chicken (by the same company) for months. It's looking a bit ragged and I had to eventually cut the face off since they had chewed into it. However, the ropes have held despite multiple games of tug-of-war. My rat terrier and Moxie mix love these toys. Best ones we've found to last.

Quality Toy
Size: 15", Style: Duck
Fun durable toy for tough chewers. Material is durable and long lasting, however can unravel with extended chewing or pulling. A favorite of our dogs. Easy to throw and toss in a game of fetch.

My grand furbaby loves this yellow duck!
Size: 15", Style: Duck
I bought this yellow duck as a gift for my grand furbaby about 2 years ago. It turned out to be his favorite toy and it lasted for quite some time. So, I have bought several of them and when I go to stay with him in the summer, I take him a brand new yellow duck. He carries it around with him and he loves it! Favorite toy!
