THE BREWERY EXPLORES DIFFERENT HOP VARIETIES AND THEIR DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS WITH THE NEW HOP TERROIR SERIES.

Just as grapes are not just grapes, hops are not just hops. The Danish microbrewery Mikkeller proves this with a new series of beers exploring the terroir of hop varieties. The hope is that it will contribute to the education of brewers and improve the overall quality of hops in the industry, Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, CEO and founder of Mikkeller explains.

‘’In the same way that people in the wine world talk about terroir - that is to say the effects that geography and climate have on grapes and wine - we can also talk about the terroir of hops and beer. A hop variety can taste markedly different depending on the country in which it’s grown and the processes involved in its production’’, he says.

This idea led to the development of nine different beers with nine varieties of hops from various locations in the world.

Pure and consistent beer

Mikkel Borg Bjergsø set up the project with his close partner Dirk Naudts from the Belgian brewery De Proefbrouwerij. The brewery brews a large part of Mikkeller’s beer, and its Research and Development Department has been conducting research in hops over a long period of time in order to produce the purest and most consistent beer possible.

The Hop Terroir project is a continuation of the Single Hop Technology project, which began in 2010 and among other things resulted in Mikkeller’s Single Hop series. The single hop IPAs provided it’s drinkers with a unique opportunity to taste the different hop varieties as isolated flavors.

Controversial project

On top of being a fun and interesting experiment for Mikkeller and De Proefbrouwerij, Terroir is a somewhat controversial project for the brewing industry because it shines a light on which hop producers make the best hops. Hopefully it will translate to raising the overall quality of hops in the long term’’, says Bjergsø.

‘’The way things are now, there isn’t any real oversight on overall hop quality. If we order a shipment of Amarillo hops, we get a bunch of bags delivered from the USA and we have to simply trust that we’re getting what we paid for, but in fact it could be coming from anywhere’’, he says.

‘’Hopefully, Terroir will help put more emphasis on honesty and straightforwardness from the producers’ end because the brewers will be able to taste how big a difference there can be between hop varieties depending on where they’re grown, which could lead them to be more critical about where they source their ingredients from.’’

Terroir - the term

Comes from the word terre, which means earth or ground. Originally a French term used in the context of wine, coffee and tea which describes the impact that the geography, geology and climate of various locations can have on the finished product. Farming areas in the same regions share soil, climatic conditions and farming techniques which all contribute to the products’ unique qualities. The same wine grape can grow in different regions and thereby have substantially different effects on the wine.

Terroir in connection to beer refers to the special characteristics of a region for the cultivation of hops, comprising growing conditions (such as soil composition, nitrogen, moisture) and climatologic conditions as well as biotic variables (such as microorganisms, managing practices). Terroir may have a significant influence on regional hop properties including aroma, flavor, bitter substances and longevity, affecting the brewing values of the cultivated hops. Therefore, brewers must rely on desired hop varieties from the same terroir in order to achieve consistent hoppy aromas in their beers.

Very comfortable in the Texas heat.
Size: Small, Color: Black/Navy/Dark Purple/Red
I got some of these as a gift and I loved them so much I purchased two more packs. I just opened my new packs and put them in the washer so I'm not leaving a photo. When I wear them they look exactly like they do on the models. I've been doing a lot of heavy outdoor work in the heat and I get drenched. These underwear have a 100% cotton crotch and the rest is 95% cotton and 5% spandex. When I first saw the wide crotch I didn't think I would like it. But these are soooo comfortable. I'm 4'11" and weight 108-112 and the size small fits loosly but well. I could probably get away with an XS but I like this loose and not too tight fit. I see some folks say these roll up. They don't roll up on me. I think they might roll if they were tight fitting. I have lots of other undergarments like these and some roll and some don't. But none of the others are cotton. They are mostly spandex and since I've found these in cotton that's all I'm wearing until summer is over. I can't feel them or see them under pants or skirts. These look more like shorts than underwear and they have a very nice thickness. Since I only had four pair to begin with, those got washed and dryed a lot. I can't tell if they shrunk since I only tried them after washing. Sorry I forgot to compare the size of the new ones to the older ones before I threw them in the washer. I'll probably buy another set and compare at that time. One thing I can report is that they do not fade at all. I just washed the black, purple and red colors with the white color and the white is still completely white. Now I have more colors and I'll probably be walking around in my underwear and no one will know. The only con I can think of is the wide crotch wouldn't work well with pads with wings, in my opinion. Try a size larger for a nice cool pair of sleeping shorts to see how they fit while they are on sale. Then go smaller if needed. I think you might enjoy these.

So comfortable and worth the buy
Size: Large, Color: Black
So comfortable!!! There is no seam in the butt and under neath, only in the front but it is really soft and non irritating. I got these for post partum but I’m already wearing them at 8.5 months pregnant. They’re probably my favorite undies right now. The length is also perfect and the material is very soft and stretchy. The waist band is the same, soft and stretchy.

Cotton Blend Was Just Too thick
Size: 3X-Large, Color: Black
I was surprised by how thick these boxers were, thicker than my jeans, much thicker than my PJs! Thick enough that I could wear them outside the home without jeans. In spite of the thickness, they were soft and very comfortable. The 3XL is a perfect fit on my 5’2” apple shaped, short waisted 215 lb body. The boxer cut helped prevent chafing, a major plus. Menstrual pads, with or without wings, do not adhere to this material, a major minus. Ultimately, feeling like I was wearing jeans to bed or wearing two pairs of pants outside the home, was just too uncomfortable for me. So disappointed because these boxers were such a great and comfortable fit.

Love the "B00" Colors, but the "RX" colors are a totally different boyshort!!!!
Size: 3X-Large, Color: B004
The packs that have a color name starting with "B00" are fantastic! I bought the black and grey ones, and a set of the multi-colored ones, and they are the best boyshorts, ever!!! I attest to this now, after 6 months of everyday wear and wash. This first part of this review is only for boyshorts that have a color name starting with "B00"! Read the end for my review of the ones with a color that starts with "RX". Completely different panty. The B00 colors are sewn impeccably well, and they are a beautiful, quality material that resembles very thick, very soft leg stockings (panty hose). They stretch easily in every direction, so they hug your curves perfectly. These are not cotton! I hate cotton undies. These are nylon, or something synthetically similar. Unlike stockings, I think it would be very difficult to put a snag in the material because of how much thicker the material is than stockings. I actually tried to snag them with my torn finger nail just to see, but the material is very strong, so I could not put a run in them. Even though these are thick and soft, they dry remarkably fast, because of the looser weave of the synthetic material. They do not roll at all at the waist or on the legs, and I am a very curvy girl, so if they were going to roll, they would definitely roll on me. They wash very well. I've machine-washed them all weekly for 6 months now, and also tumble dried them on the low setting, at a laundromat. No issues at all with fading, color-bleed. shrinking, ravels, and no pilling. These are definitely my everyday undies. One really nice feature is that since these are tagless, they sewed a few raised lines of soft stitching in the back, so you'd always know where your rear-end goes. One thing some people may not like, is that there is no separate liner on the crotch. It is pretty much the same material as the rest of the panty, but a bit thicker, with an extra light layer of lighter-colored stitching incorporated into the inside of the fabric, to make it a bit more absorbent. I actually prefer this, because it means they dry faster, and they are less likely to fall apart in the gusset, but some people may prefer the extra liner of fabric that is typical for most undies. These are not binding at all, so not a shaper panty by any means, but they are certainly very comfortable and stay where you put them. I would think these would be fantastic for backpacking (I love backpacking!) for all the features I mentioned. I have micromodal boy shorts by meundies that I used to wear for hiking, but I will definitely wear these instead because of the reduced drying time after washing, or when sweating. The other micromodal bamboo/cotton-like materials just hold too much moisture for hiking. Undies that retain moisture can cause painful chafing, and can even contribute to hypothermia. I love these! I am buying more!! REVIEW UPDATE! Well, I did buy more. I bought the 5-pack of color that starts with "RX", and I was super disappointed! The "RX" ones are NOTHING like the "R00" ones I described above. Look closely at the pictures. Those ones with a different fabric panel on the hip are tight, not nearly as stretchy, roll instantly on my inner thighs, dip in the back, are not nearly as soft, and do not dry quickly. They are a completely different boyshort, and I do not like "RX" model of boyshort at all. I suppose if you had no meat on your thighs and you wanted a shaper-type panty, the "RX" might be exactly what you're looking for, but not for me, for sure.
