This is the story of the 1960 season, day by day, as chronicled in Pittsburghs two daily papers, the Press and the Post-Gazette, and in the weekly Pittsburgh Courier, along with the observations of many of the participating players and of a 12-year-old fan: the author. He was able to see 18 games that summer in the company of his grandfather, Mike Cushing, who was the usher in the Pirates front office at Forbes Field.

This book is a labor of love. Pap-pap Cushing worked for the Pirates for 40 years, took Rick to countless games, and told him stories about past Pirates greats, specifically Honus Wagner. His maternal grandfather, Red Malone, also figures into the story. He, too, was a lifelong Pirates fan and told him stories about the team.

The final chapter -- titled "Where Are They Now?" -- brings up to date all the principle characters on the 1960 Pirates.

About the Author

Rick Cushing has a B.A. in history from the University of Louisville and is retired after working as a staff writer/copy editor for The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., for 30 years. He is a native of Pittsburgh but currently lives in Jeffersonville, Ind.

Kids like them
Size: 2 Pound
These are a good buy for a classroom goody jar. They are peanut free and gluten free. Although the Amazon bag did say processed in a factory that handles peanuts.

Flavor distribution could be better
Size: 2 Pound
I receive Spravato treatments, and the taste is nasty. Fruit candy is a good way to get rid of it. I discovered that the tropical fruit punch flavor was best at it. Unfortunately, the clinic switched to a different kind of suckers and kept them poorly stocked, so I bought my own. Two pounds of suckers and not a single tropical fruit punch! Lots of mango and orange, which also work well, but in two pounds, you'd think there'd be some of every flavor.
