About the work

Eva Stenram has been selected by a panel as one of forty-eight artists to feature in The London Open 2015, the Whitechapel Gallery’s triennial open submission exhibition. To accompany her works on display from 15 July–6 September 2015, Stenram has produced a new limited edition. This silver gelatin print is the latest work in the artist's 'Drape' series, created exclusively for the Whitechapel Gallery.

Drape XIV takes as it's source a vintage 'pin up' negative which the artist bought on eBay. The original size and format of the photograph is retained but Stenram seamlessly extends the drapery, which was formerly the background of the scene, to partially obscure the model’s body. All that is left exposed are the bare legs, detached from the human form. By excising the photograph from the context of a magazine spread and dissecting the original scene, Stenram draws attention to the voyeuristic nature of the image.

About the artist

Eva Stenram was born in Stockholm, Sweden, but moved to the UK where she studied for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Media at the Slade School of Fine Art in the late 90s and an MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in 2001-2003. In her work, Stenram interacts with and re-interprets imagery, meticulously using fragments of found materials and finding similarities in photographic styles. As a kind of photographic archaeologist, she uses a multitude of sources including negatives, slides, magazines, Internet images and photographic prints and alters them through digital, analogue or physical manipulation. By editing the original pieces, their functions become disrupted and often subverted – the contexts are now ambivalent and timeless, which generates curiosity and a desire to see.

Stenram currently lives and works in London, UK.

Size, make sure to size up base on you hight and shoulders
I bought this jacket for my brother to wear at our dad's funeral. It was a gold and white theme. He is 5'10 and slim. We are in jamaica and the measurement that he got of himself at the store differs from the size chart here. The numbers on his measurements in my country are smaller than the once on amazon. He has broad shoulders. I got a large just to play safe, In case I would have to make any adjustments. A medium would have been closer to our numbers but the size up was better. He just wish it would have been just a bit longer in length. And he said the shoulder did feel slightly snug. So I think if he were to get another one he would go with an XL.
